Energy Conservation Measures in Healthcare

Energy Retrofits
Size: Over 100 Locations
Market Segment: Healthcare

AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center operates over a hundred locations including hospitals, behavioral treatment centers, urgent care, fitness and local patient treatment facilities in the greater South Jersey area. Rich Energy Solutions developed an detailed property roster of their facilities and aggregated the purchase deregulated energy for all of their facilities saving AtlantiCare over 15% on their utility costs.

Rich Energy Solutions has performed several energy retrofits over the past 10 years for Atlanticare:

  1. Kessler Hospital, Hammonton, NJ – RES working with Atlanticare management developed a concept to separate an entire two floor patient wing with emergency room in a fully operating hospital from the central steam boiler and chiller plant when the main campus facilities were closing. RES designed and installed a Hydrotherm condensing boiler plant to replace steam hot water heat exchanger, a McQuay high efficiency chiller to displace the steam absorber chiller, new high efficiency gas domestic hot water and retrofitted the existing lighting in the facility.
  2. Healthplex, Atlantic city, NJ – RES replaced the original packaged rooftop units with hot water heating coils feed from an inefficient boiler plan. Engineered and installed new state of the art McQuay packaged rooftop units and building management controls. These new units required intricate steel framing around the main lobby atrium and existing screen walls on the roof. The operating efficiency of the new equipment combined with the control upgrade reduced the operating expense by over 20% and fixed a problem that existed for 10 years. This upgrade allowed the antiquated boilers to be reduced in size and replaced with modular condensing boilers the following year.
  3. Healthpark Office Complex, Egg Harbor Township, NJ – RES conducted lighting retrofits in the corporate offices and operation buildings. The projects received New Jersey Smart Start incentives and the internal rate of return for these projects was 39%.
  4. Currently, Rich Energy Solutions is surveying several new locations to provide a special offer from Philips LED Lighting. More than 50 locations will be retrofitted over the next 18 months.
